![]() And periodically flipping whisky bottles over onto their sides to temporarily wet the cork probably doesn't help matters - the cork is just going to dry back out again once the bottle is once again stored upright, and the middle part of the cork (where breakage tends to happen) probably won't get very wet anyway. There is IMHO little to gain by keeping wet the cork of a whisky bottle, because oxidation is not for whisky the deadly peril which it is for wine. Note that this is a different issue from whisky being exposed to corks contaminated with TCA: But they should not be on their sides for long periods of time. Speaking from personal experience (of having tasted the exact same whisky from 2 bottles respectively stored vertically and horizontally) this is a process that so far as I can tell can take weeks or months, so the bottle being on its side for a brief period of time like a few days is probably not an issue, and probably happens to some bottles anyway during shipment thru the supply chain. IMHO this matters less with regard to the structural integrity of the cork - much more importantly bad flavors will leach into the whisky from the cork and thus ruin the flavor of the whisky. I'll pay a few bucks extra per bottle to support independent businesses at this point, people who respect me as a customer and my choices as a human being.Īs others have said, the higher ABV% of whisky means the latter will interact more aggressively with the cork than wine will. Some of the employees have been sociable and nice, but some are taking the aggressive "FU, you don't know anything" sales schtick way too damn seriously. They came into my area and bought out the biggest liquor store chain, putting several people at several locations out of a job, and now they come at me with this used car salesman attitude EVERY time I go in for the slightest thing. I am not afraid to tell them so at this point. I'm also going to start not answering their questions or outright telling them to leave me to my shopping because while I know it is their job I don't appreciate the pressure and manipulation. I absolutely abhor their aggressive sales tactics and I am going to start only shopping there for items no other local liquor store has. I made up some BS that I'd gotten a text from the SO asking for a specific one after all. He noticed when I went to check out and asked me if I'd changed my mind (he was not my cashier, just being nosy, of course). I went and put it back on the shelf and picked up the bottle I had come for. Customer reviews on the app did not hold up. Total wine dude talked me out of the bourbon I was going to buy and into a brand that was his "personal favorite" with his little picture on the tag and everything.
